Day 41: Makalu Base Camp and new friends

Makalu Base Camp 4870m

After seven days in the wilderness we descended to the Barun valley and YangLa Kharka, were we joined the other clients for stage 2. These are Rod, Rick, Dave, Gregg and Emma. We're all getting to know our new fellow trekkers and looking forward to coming time in the mountains.

It has been great to descend from the snows, and the shop at Yang La Kharka immediately made sales of chocolate and treats. The weather on the rest day there was a rotten tease luring us into long awaited laundry and then raining post 10am for the remainder of the day.

The following day we left the site in in glorious sunshine with the stunning rock walls and domes of the valley leaving us in awe with cameras clicking away. After a pleasant lunch we continued up the valley to a terraced campsite with a very welcome mess room and stove, where we spent the next rest/acclimatisation day. The trekking has now changed noticeably from the weather, rigours and risks of Stage 1 to established routes - heavenly!

A further day's trek up the valley brought us into sight of the magnificence of Makalu with us camping at Base Camp where the weather has continued clear and the mountain continuingly gazes down at us. With the continual altitude gain we have a further acclimatisation here at Makalu BC and the morning has been spent brushing up on rope skills for the coming pass crossings.

Group photo after pujaThis morning Friday 7th April we had another Puja conducted by Tsering our Sherpa guide and Lama for everyone involved in the trek for a safe crossing of the high passes and continued success for the GHT.

Makalu Base Camp.
